Early language learning lessons in Luxembourg

Between the ages of 4 and 6, children don’t learn a language: they pick it up. Early language learning makes the most of that window, through play, nursery rhymes and pictures — never through lessons.

Early language learning lessons from age 4

Between the ages of 4 and 6, children make no effort to learn a language: they pick it up. Nursery rhymes, pictures, little games — half an hour of attention at a time, never a lesson, never homework.

The teacher speaks the language and doesn’t translate it: the child understands through gestures, drawings and repetition, exactly as they understood their first language. We never ask for anything they can’t give, and we stop when their attention drifts — it’s the only pace that works at this age, and the only one that leaves them wanting more.

Why start so early

Before the age of six, children reproduce sounds they will never hear quite so precisely again. They aren’t yet afraid of making mistakes, and it’s that lack of fear, more than memory, that makes the difference: they repeat, get it wrong, try again, without ever experiencing it as failure. The same learning will take ten times the effort at fifteen.

In Luxembourg, the question comes up earlier than elsewhere. Crèches and maisons relais already work with children in Luxembourgish and French, and primary school will add German. A child who speaks another language at home therefore arrives with one more language — and sometimes a step behind in the ones they’re expected to use.

Early learning isn’t aiming for a level, a mark or a programme. It aims for the ear and for confidence: so that the language is no longer a stranger when it comes back in class. It’s a small thing at this age — half an hour of attention at a time — and it’s what prevents the dreaded subject later on.

The best teachers

Who you learn with

We take great care in choosing our teachers: each one is interviewed and tested before their first lesson. We look at their degree, of course, but just as much at the way they explain – that is what helps a student progress. Then we look among our teachers for the one whose profile matches your level and your goal.

  • Teachers holding at least a bachelor’s degree, recruited after an interview and a test.
  • Native speakers for spoken language practice.
  • 96% satisfied customers and more than 140,000 hours of lessons taught.
  • An organisation approved by the Ministry of National Education: your corporate training qualifies for a tax credit of 20% to 35%.
Portrait of Bettina

As a native German speaker, I particularly enjoy teaching German in all its subtlety, as one of the three languages used and recognised by law in the Grand Duchy. By drawing on a range of learning methods and adding varied exercises suited to each student’s level, I love seeing their progress and their pleasure in learning and perfecting the language.

What our students say

The reviews shown come from our Google page or were sent to us directly: the name, rating and date are those of the review, and we never rewrite any of them. The overall rating is Google’s – it takes every review into account, including the less favourable ones. How we collect our reviews

I contacted Cours At Home to take Luxembourgish lessons. The lessons are tailored to what we ask for, and scheduling lessons with the teacher is very flexible. I really recommend it, I’m very satisfied.

This language school is great and the staff really listen. Jérôme Koenigsecke, who runs it, is always fully available and will answer all your questions. Liliana (Luxembourgish teacher) is very caring and teaches with exemplary skill.
Florine Lahsene Google, September 2024 Review translated from French
I am very happy with Cours at Home’s services. I have been using them for a little over three years now, and I can confirm that their service is excellent. Cours at Home always listens to its clients’ needs – needs which, in my case, are rather demanding, since I am usually looking for German-speaking teachers.

From what age?

We start from age four for private lessons, and from age two in childcare settings, where early learning happens in groups and as part of the children’s daily routine. Before four, an individual lesson makes little sense: at that age, a language is picked up through group play, not one to one.

My child doesn’t speak their mother tongue very well yet. Isn’t it too early?

It’s the most common worry, and it’s unfounded: hearing several languages doesn’t delay speech. A child may mix languages for a while — that’s normal, and it resolves on its own. If you have a genuine concern about speech, talk to your paediatrician first: that isn’t our field, and we won’t pretend otherwise.

How long is a session?

Half an hour, sometimes less. That’s the real attention span of a child this age, and nothing is learned beyond it: the next session would suffer. Two short sessions a week are better than one long one they would end up dreading.

Is it really worth it if they forget everything afterwards?

The vocabulary is forgotten; the ear remains. A child who heard a language early recognises its sounds years later and reproduces them without an accent — precisely what can no longer be made up in adolescence. And they approach the subject without fear of the unknown, which counts for a lot on the day of their first mark.

Do you work in crèches and childcare settings?

Yes, on site, in small groups and at a pace agreed with the team. The content is aligned with your educational plan rather than a ready-made programme, and we hold regular reviews with the managers.
