Italian lessons in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, Italian is a family language before it’s a school subject: people learn it so as not to lose it, to pass it on, or for a mark on the report.

Make progress in Italian at your own level

Italian lessons in primary school

Many Italian families here want the language not to be lost from one generation to the next. The child understands what the grandparents say, answers in French, and nobody really chose for things to turn out that way.

So we pick up where it still holds: speaking, stories, games — then reading and writing, which are almost always what’s missing. Keeping a family language alive takes few hours, provided you start before it becomes a language the child understands but can no longer speak.

Italian lessons in secondary school

Whether chosen as a modern language or spoken at home, Italian is assessed like any other: grammar, texts, written expression. We close the gap between what the pupil can say and what’s expected of them on paper.

It is the scale on which the secondary school programmes are built: we know where the student needs to be at the end of the year, and we start by looking at where they really are.

  1. A1

    Breakthrough

Introduce yourself, greet people, ask simple questions about yourself.

  3. B1

  5. C1

Express yourself without searching for words, including on technical topics.

  6. C2

    Mastery

Understand effortlessly and convey nuance, both in writing and speaking.

Italian lessons for adults

For work, for family or for the pleasure of a language you love. We start from your real level, often better in speaking than in writing, and move forward on what’s useful to you.

The whole scale is open to you: we start at A1 if you have never practised, and stop at the level your project requires – an official test, a job, settling here for good. Not sure where you stand? We find out before the first lesson.

Why Italian is still passed down in Luxembourg

The Italian community is one of the oldest in the country, and the language has been through three generations. It wears thinner with each one: the grandparents speak Italian, the parents answer in Italian and think in French, the children understand everything and no longer answer. Nobody decided it would happen this way — it’s simply what happens when a language is only used at the dinner table.

At school, though, it’s assessed like any other. Pupils who speak it at home are often the first to be surprised: they thought they had a head start, and discover that the grammar, spelling and register expected on paper aren’t those of the family kitchen. The gap between what they can say and what they’re asked to write is what costs them marks.

For adults, Italian is often a language of return: grandparents you want to understand, a house back in Italy, suppliers or clients on the other side of the Alps. You almost never start from zero — something always remains, and that’s what we build on.

The best teachers

Who you learn with

We take great care in choosing our teachers: each one is interviewed and tested before their first lesson. We look at their degree, of course, but just as much at the way they explain – that is what helps a student progress. Then we look among our teachers for the one whose profile matches your level and your goal.

  • Teachers holding at least a bachelor’s degree, recruited after an interview and a test.
  • Native speakers for spoken language practice.
  • 96% satisfied customers and more than 140,000 hours of lessons taught.
  • An organisation approved by the Ministry of National Education: your corporate training qualifies for a tax credit of 20% to 35%.
Portrait of Bettina

As a native German speaker, I particularly enjoy teaching German in all its subtlety, as one of the three languages used and recognised by law in the Grand Duchy. By drawing on a range of learning methods and adding varied exercises suited to each student’s level, I love seeing their progress and their pleasure in learning and perfecting the language.

What our students say

The reviews shown come from our Google page or were sent to us directly: the name, rating and date are those of the review, and we never rewrite any of them. The overall rating is Google’s – it takes every review into account, including the less favourable ones. How we collect our reviews

I contacted Cours At Home to take Luxembourgish lessons. The lessons are tailored to what we ask for, and scheduling lessons with the teacher is very flexible. I really recommend it, I’m very satisfied.

This language school is great and the staff really listen. Jérôme Koenigsecke, who runs it, is always fully available and will answer all your questions. Liliana (Luxembourgish teacher) is very caring and teaches with exemplary skill.
Florine Lahsene Google, September 2024 Review translated from French
I am very happy with Cours at Home’s services. I have been using them for a little over three years now, and I can confirm that their service is excellent. Cours at Home always listens to its clients’ needs – needs which, in my case, are rather demanding, since I am usually looking for German-speaking teachers.
NMP Google, September 2024 Review translated from French

My child understands Italian but always answers in French. Can that be turned around?

Yes, and it’s the most common request we get for this language. Understanding takes longest to acquire, and it’s already there: what’s missing is the habit of speaking. The teacher speaks Italian and doesn’t translate, and the child ends up answering — it takes a few weeks, rarely more.

We speak Italian at home. Does he still need lessons?

To speak it, no. To write it, often: home Italian is spoken Italian, sometimes coloured by a regional dialect, and that’s not what’s expected on paper. If Italian counts on the report, it’s the gap between the two we work on, not the language itself.

Are your teachers Italian speakers?

Yes, native or bilingual Italian speakers. For a child keeping up a family language, we look for someone who can also talk about the culture, the regions, the food — that’s what sparks interest at that age, far more than a textbook.

I haven’t practised for twenty years. Where will you start me?

Where you really are, which is almost always higher than you think — and rarely at the same level in speaking and writing. We assess both before the first lesson, then start from there, without making you go over what you already know.

Can lessons take place online?

Yes, with the same teacher and the same method: virtual classroom, whiteboard, screen sharing. For a language you’re maintaining rather than learning, video call has an advantage — it makes short, regular sessions easy to keep up.
