Philosophy lessons in secondary school

A subject where you’re marked on a way of thinking that is rarely taught as such: the authors are on the syllabus, the method much less so. Hence those papers that contain sound ideas and come back with a mediocre mark.

So we read the authors on the syllabus, and above all we work on the essay: finding a central question and sticking to it, building a plan that progresses instead of lining up three parts, choosing examples that serve the argument. It’s one of the subjects where a few sessions shift a mark the most — not because you learn to think, but because you finally learn what a paper is expected to do.

Why philosophy is marked on method

It is the only secondary-school subject that asks pupils for something they have never been taught: to build a personal argument, in a precise form, in four hours. The authors are on the syllabus; the method much less so — it is passed on through hints, and everyone muddles through.

Hence papers that set out sound ideas and get a mediocre mark. What’s assessed isn’t what you think, nor even what you’ve read: it’s a central question held from start to finish, a plan that progresses instead of setting ideas side by side, examples that serve the argument rather than decorate it.

All of this can be taught, and fairly quickly. It is even one of the subjects where a few sessions change a mark the most — not because you learn to think, but because you finally learn what is expected.

The best teachers

Who you learn with

We take great care in choosing our teachers: each one is interviewed and tested before their first lesson. We look at their degree, of course, but just as much at the way they explain – that is what helps a student progress. Then we look among our teachers for the one whose profile matches your level and your goal.

  • Teachers holding at least a bachelor’s degree, recruited after an interview and a test.
  • Native speakers for spoken language practice.
  • 96% satisfied customers and more than 140,000 hours of lessons taught.
  • An organisation approved by the Ministry of National Education: your corporate training qualifies for a tax credit of 20% to 35%.
Portrait of Karin

I have been teaching for Cours at Home since 2010 and have never wanted to leave the company, because of the steady stream of teaching assignments I have received since I joined, and because of how reliable and flexible they are.

What our students say

The reviews shown come from our Google page or were sent to us directly: the name, rating and date are those of the review, and we never rewrite any of them. The overall rating is Google’s – it takes every review into account, including the less favourable ones. How we collect our reviews

I contacted Cours At Home to take Luxembourgish lessons. The lessons are tailored to what we ask for, and scheduling lessons with the teacher is very flexible. I really recommend it, I’m very satisfied.

This language school is great and the staff really listen. Jérôme Koenigsecke, who runs it, is always fully available and will answer all your questions. Liliana (Luxembourgish teacher) is very caring and teaches with exemplary skill.
Florine Lahsene Google, September 2024 Review translated from French
I am very happy with Cours at Home’s services. I have been using them for a little over three years now, and I can confirm that their service is excellent. Cours at Home always listens to its clients’ needs – needs which, in my case, are rather demanding, since I am usually looking for German-speaking teachers.

My child has ideas but poor marks. Is that common?

It’s the textbook case. You’re not marked on what you think but on how you build it: the central question, the progression, examples in service of the argument. A pupil who has ideas starts with the essentials — what’s missing is the form, and that’s what can be learned fastest.

Do you have to have read the authors in full?

No, and nobody does. It’s better to know a few texts well and know how to use them than to have skimmed the whole syllabus. A paper is judged on how a reference is used, not on the number of names quoted.

How many sessions before it shows?

Sooner than in most subjects, because what’s missing is method, not knowledge. A few essays written and gone over in detail are often enough to shift a mark. We don’t promise a figure, but it’s the feedback we hear most often.

Do you also work on text commentary?

Yes. It’s a different exercise, and pupils often do better at it than at the essay: it gives them something to hold on to. We work on both, starting with the one where the pupil has most to gain.

Can you prepare for the end-of-school exam in a few weeks?

You can gain marks, yes, provided you work on papers written and corrected rather than on revision. Starting earlier is obviously better — but philosophy is one of the few subjects where catching up late isn’t futile.
