Make progress in Biology at your own level

Biology lessons in secondary school

Lots of vocabulary, lots of diagrams, and exams that ask you to explain rather than recite. That’s the trap of the subject: it reads easily, so pupils revise by rereading — and then find themselves facing a question that asks them to link two ideas, or comment on a document they have never seen.

So we learn to build an answer: set out the mechanism, support it with the exact vocabulary, stop once the question has been answered. The vocabulary is worked on along the way, because a biology paper is also judged on its words — but it becomes a tool instead of a list, and the subject gets lighter.

Why biology isn’t a subject to recite

It is the costliest misunderstanding in secondary school. Biology looks like a subject to learn by heart: lots of words, lots of diagrams, chapters that read like a documentary. So pupils tackle it by rereading — and find themselves facing questions that ask them to explain a mechanism, link two ideas, or interpret a document they have never seen.

The vocabulary, for its part, is real: a biology paper is judged on precise words, used in the right place. But learning it isn’t enough, and learning it on its own is the surest way to wear yourself out on a subject you thought was easy.

What earns the mark is construction: a biology answer has a structure, almost always the same one, and it can be taught. That is what we work on first — the subject lightens of its own accord once you stop trying to memorise everything.

The best teachers

Who you learn with

We take great care in choosing our teachers: each one is interviewed and tested before their first lesson. We look at their degree, of course, but just as much at the way they explain – that is what helps a student progress. Then we look among our teachers for the one whose profile matches your level and your goal.

  • Teachers holding at least a bachelor’s degree, recruited after an interview and a test.
  • Native speakers for spoken language practice.
  • 96% satisfied customers and more than 140,000 hours of lessons taught.
  • An organisation approved by the Ministry of National Education: your corporate training qualifies for a tax credit of 20% to 35%.
Portrait of Giordano

I started giving private lessons, mostly in maths and a little in physics. Since then I have had students at every level of lower and upper secondary school, which has helped me improve my teaching method over time. I understand that many students have significant gaps. I like the idea that I can help students who are struggling, and seeing a student progress gives me personal satisfaction because it makes me feel useful.

I contacted Cours At Home to take Luxembourgish lessons. The lessons are tailored to what we ask for, and scheduling lessons with the teacher is very flexible. I really recommend it, I’m very satisfied.

This language school is great and the staff really listen. Jérôme Koenigsecke, who runs it, is always fully available and will answer all your questions. Liliana (Luxembourgish teacher) is very caring and teaches with exemplary skill.
Florine Lahsene Google, September 2024 Review translated from French
I am very happy with Cours at Home’s services. I have been using them for a little over three years now, and I can confirm that their service is excellent. Cours at Home always listens to its clients’ needs – needs which, in my case, are rather demanding, since I am usually looking for German-speaking teachers.

My child learns their lessons and still does badly. How can that be?

Because they revise as if reading, and they’re assessed on construction. It’s the most common case in biology, and the most discouraging: the work is real, the method isn’t. A few sessions on how to build an answer lift a mark that hours of rereading couldn’t shift.

Is a lot of vocabulary needed?

Yes, and it counts on paper: a correct mechanism described in approximate words loses marks. But we learn it through the answers we build, not from lists — that’s what makes it stick until the exam.

Do you work on interpreting documents?

It’s a large part of the work. Graphs, experiments, tables of results: the exercise is to draw out what a document really says, without adding what you’ve learned elsewhere. It can be practised, and it very quickly sets a good paper apart.

Do you prepare for health-care entrance exams and returns to study?

Yes. For an adult, we target the chapters on the exam syllabus and its method, without redoing the whole subject. Many of our adult learners are aiming for an entrance exam or a paramedical training course.

Can we start partway through the year?

Yes, at any time and with no minimum commitment. Before the first lesson, we look at the most recent work handed in: it shows better than any test what is really missing.
