Geography lessons in secondary school

Maps, statistics, documents to comment on: secondary-school geography is as much about analysis as about learning. It’s no longer a subject of locations — an exam presents a map or a table of figures and asks you to draw something from it.

So we revise the syllabus, because you can’t analyse anything without knowing what you’re talking about, and we practise the exercise as it is set: reading a piece of data, comparing it, being wary of an isolated percentage, spotting a scale. These skills are acquired in a few sessions and come in useful on every document in the syllabus, whatever the chapter.

Why geography is as much about analysis as learning

It has kept its reputation as a subject of locations — rivers, capitals, mountain ranges. That is no longer what’s assessed. A geography exam presents a map, a table of figures, a text, and asks for an analysis: read a piece of data, compare it, explain it using what you’ve learned.

So it’s a subject of tools. Knowing how to read a population pyramid, spot a scale, be wary of an isolated percentage — these skills can be passed on in a few sessions and come in useful on every document in the syllabus, whatever the chapter.

The syllabus itself still has to be known: you can’t analyse anything without knowing what you’re talking about. But between a pupil who has learned everything without knowing how to comment and one who can comment with average knowledge, it’s the second who hands in the better paper.

The best teachers

Who you learn with

We take great care in choosing our teachers: each one is interviewed and tested before their first lesson. We look at their degree, of course, but just as much at the way they explain – that is what helps a student progress. Then we look among our teachers for the one whose profile matches your level and your goal.

  • Teachers holding at least a bachelor’s degree, recruited after an interview and a test.
  • Native speakers for spoken language practice.
  • 96% satisfied customers and more than 140,000 hours of lessons taught.
  • An organisation approved by the Ministry of National Education: your corporate training qualifies for a tax credit of 20% to 35%.
Portrait of Karin

I have been teaching for Cours at Home since 2010 and have never wanted to leave the company, because of the steady stream of teaching assignments I have received since I joined, and because of how reliable and flexible they are.

What our students say

The reviews shown come from our Google page or were sent to us directly: the name, rating and date are those of the review, and we never rewrite any of them. The overall rating is Google’s – it takes every review into account, including the less favourable ones. How we collect our reviews

This language school is great and the staff really listen. Jérôme Koenigsecke, who runs it, is always fully available and will answer all your questions. Liliana (Luxembourgish teacher) is very caring and teaches with exemplary skill.
Florine Lahsene Google, September 2024 Review translated from French
I am very happy with Cours at Home’s services. I have been using them for a little over three years now, and I can confirm that their service is excellent. Cours at Home always listens to its clients’ needs – needs which, in my case, are rather demanding, since I am usually looking for German-speaking teachers.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us most

Have a question? Call us now

Can you really work on geography?

Yes, and it’s often the subject with the best ratio of effort to marks gained. It relies on a few transferable skills — reading a map, a graph, a table — which, once acquired, serve in every exam.

My child mixes up geography and social sciences depending on the year. Can you keep up?

Yes. Depending on the section and the school, geography is taught on its own or merged with history and citizenship education. We start from their exercise book and homework, not from a theoretical syllabus.

Do you work on sketch maps and maps to draw?

Yes, when the exam requires them. A sketch map is marked on precise criteria — an organised key, consistent symbols, a title that answers the question — and these are marks rarely lost through not knowing the course.

Do figures have to be learned by heart?

A few orders of magnitude, not tables. What matters is knowing how to place a piece of data: saying whether a figure is high or low, and compared with what. That’s what a commentary expects.

Can we take lessons for just one period, before the exams?

Yes, with no minimum commitment. We then focus on full papers, done under timed conditions and gone over afterwards — that’s what pays off most when the deadline is close.
