History lessons in secondary school

Memorising dates is no longer enough: pupils are asked to explain, connect and comment on a document. It’s the subject’s costliest misunderstanding — pupils who have genuinely learned their lesson and recite it where they were expected to explain.

So we revise the key reference points on the syllabus, because without them nothing can be placed in context, but we work just as much on exam method: reading a document right to the end, saying who is speaking and to whom, distinguishing what the source shows from what it is trying to show, then building an answer that holds together. It’s this second part that makes the difference on a paper.

Why history is no longer learned by heart

Parents knew a subject of dates and narratives; their children sit document-based exams. Pupils are given a text, a poster, a graph, and asked to draw something from it — to place it in context, critique it, link it to what they know. Memory is no longer enough, and hasn’t been for a long time.

Key reference points are still necessary: without a few solid dates, nothing can be placed in context. But they have become a starting point, not an answer. This is the misunderstanding that costs the most marks — pupils who have genuinely learned their lesson and recite it where they were expected to explain.

Method, on the other hand, can be taught and practised: reading a document right to the end, saying who is speaking and to whom, distinguishing what the source shows from what it is trying to show. It’s concrete work, and it quickly shows on a paper.

The best teachers

Who you learn with

We take great care in choosing our teachers: each one is interviewed and tested before their first lesson. We look at their degree, of course, but just as much at the way they explain – that is what helps a student progress. Then we look among our teachers for the one whose profile matches your level and your goal.

  • Teachers holding at least a bachelor’s degree, recruited after an interview and a test.
  • Native speakers for spoken language practice.
  • 96% satisfied customers and more than 140,000 hours of lessons taught.
  • An organisation approved by the Ministry of National Education: your corporate training qualifies for a tax credit of 20% to 35%.
Portrait of Karin

I have been teaching for Cours at Home since 2010 and have never wanted to leave the company, because of the steady stream of teaching assignments I have received since I joined, and because of how reliable and flexible they are.

What our students say

The reviews shown come from our Google page or were sent to us directly: the name, rating and date are those of the review, and we never rewrite any of them. The overall rating is Google’s – it takes every review into account, including the less favourable ones. How we collect our reviews

I contacted Cours At Home to take Luxembourgish lessons. The lessons are tailored to what we ask for, and scheduling lessons with the teacher is very flexible. I really recommend it, I’m very satisfied.

This language school is great and the staff really listen. Jérôme Koenigsecke, who runs it, is always fully available and will answer all your questions. Liliana (Luxembourgish teacher) is very caring and teaches with exemplary skill.
Florine Lahsene Google, September 2024 Review translated from French
I am very happy with Cours at Home’s services. I have been using them for a little over three years now, and I can confirm that their service is excellent. Cours at Home always listens to its clients’ needs – needs which, in my case, are rather demanding, since I am usually looking for German-speaking teachers.

My child learns their lessons and still doesn’t get a pass mark. Where’s the problem?

Almost always in the exercise, not in the knowledge. A history exam asks you to explain and comment; reciting a perfectly learned lesson doesn’t answer the question asked. It’s frustrating for the pupil, who feels they have worked for nothing — and it’s what can be put right fastest.

Do dates still need to be learned?

A few, thoroughly: without reference points, you can’t place a document in context or link two events. But they’re a starting point, not an answer. We keep only a few and put them to use often.

Do you work on document commentary?

It’s the core of the work. We practise on documents the pupil has never seen, because that is exactly the situation in the exam — a document already studied in class tests only memory.

Do you follow the Luxembourg curriculum?

Yes, and also those of the French, European and international schools in the country: expectations and marking differ between them. Tell us the school and the section, and we’ll match you with someone who knows them.

Can you prepare for the end-of-school exam?

Yes, and we step up the pace in the weeks beforehand. The work then focuses on full papers, written under timed conditions and then gone over in detail: that’s what pays off most at that stage.
